National Highways has begun a major programme of maintenance work on the A38 Willington Bridge, which carries the A5132 Carriers Road over the A38. The work started in September 2026 and is expected to continue until summer 2028, including concrete repairs, waterproofing, bridge joint repairs, new safety barriers and resurfacing.

During the first phase, the A38 between the A5121 Claymills junction and the A50 Toyota Interchange will generally remain open with two narrow lanes in each direction and a temporary 40mph speed limit, although a number of overnight closures will also be required. From 9 November 2026 until June 2027, the A5132 Carriers Road bridge is due to be closed to vehicles, with signed diversions in place. Access for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders will be maintained.

Residents can keep up to date with the work on the National Highways A38 Willington Bridge project page.

National Highways also produces a weekly A38 email update, normally issued on Fridays, covering the Willington Bridge works and other projects along the A38 between Birmingham and Derby. To receive these updates, residents can subscribe by emailing NoReplyA38WMids@nationalhighways.co.uk.

We are grateful to Cllr Martyn Ford, our Derbyshire County Councillor, for providing details following the recent National Highways information event in Repton.
